Notes

The Gober & Freinbichler Vineyard Project 004 is a project undertaken "as a way of connecting soulful yet overlooked vineyards with soulful growers." This project connects Dominik Gober and Gerald Freinbichler, two young growers that have started up a winery in Burgenland, Austria. Together, they are buying up vineyards for cheap from co-op members (due to low demand) and improving the farming methods to make the vineyards economically viable and qualitatively better. Their goal is to make Blaufränkisch that shows Burgenland is more than a region with heavy soils and warm weather that produces fat wines. All grapes are farmed organically, with certification pending in 2021.

Domink Gober and Gerald Freinbichler met when they worked together in the cellar of the famous Franz Weninger, one of Austria's most celebrated producers. With Franz’s encouragement, they decided to renovate an old garage winery and a few hectares of Blaufränkisch vineyards, and the pair haven't looked back since. The 2021 Gober & Freinbichler Blaufränkisch has fruit from two villages in Burgenland, Neckenmarkt and Horitschon, exactly half from each: the Neckenmarkt half brings minerality, crunchy fruit flavors and spice while the fruit from Horitschon brings body, fine grain tannin and vibrant acidity. Mid ruby color with expressive aromas of cranberries, raspberries, cherries, fresh flowers and spice with subtle undertones of smoke and soil. The palate is thirst-quenching, delicious and impeccably balanced with the perfect amount of mineral, fruit and earth flavors playing off each other as the wine flows into an invigorating finish. This beautiful Blaufränkisch would be delicious with braised red cabbage, smoked sausages and spätzle.
